The Munsterkerk in Roermond with its towers and dome against a blue sky

Around the Munsterkerk

On Munsterplein stands the Munsterkerk, the Church of Our Lady, built in the early thirteenth century as the church of a Cistercian convent and eight hundred years old in 2020. Beneath the dome lies the tomb of Count Gerard of Guelders and Margaret of Brabant, according to art historians the oldest double tomb monument in the Netherlands. From April to October you can go inside free of charge every day from 14:00 to 17:00.

Pierre Cuypers restored the church in the second half of the nineteenth century and gave it the two towers at the front. He also designed the bandstand in the middle of the square, dating from 1880, where there is music almost every weekend in summer; his statue stands next to the church. From the square, Steenweg, a busy shopping street with several listed buildings, leads to the Varkensmarkt.

The town hall on the Markt in Roermond, with the little carillon tower

The Markt and the cathedral

The town hall stands on the Markt: a raithuys is mentioned here as early as 1399, and the current front facade dates from around 1700. Every day at 12:00 the carillon figures turn in the little tower, among them Pierre Cuypers and Empress Maria Theresa. On Saturdays the weekly market is held on the Markt from 9:30 to 16:00.

On the same Markt stands St Christopher’s Cathedral, late Gothic and begun around 1410. On 28 February 1945, a day before the liberation, the Germans blew up the tower; since 1957 it has once again been crowned by the gilded statue of St Christopher, known in the town as Sjtuf. Inside you will see stained-glass windows by artists including Joep Nicolas; the church is open daily from 14:00 to 17:00, free of charge.

The four-arched Stenen Brug over the Roer in Roermond, with the houses on the other side

Across the Stenen Brug to the Roerkade

Along the Roerkade lie the oldest plots in the town, separated by alleys running down to the water; today they are home to restaurants and terraces on the Roer. The Stenen Brug, the stone bridge also known as the Maria Theresiabrug, was rebuilt in 1771 from Namur bluestone, paid for by Empress Maria Theresa. It has four arches and is for pedestrians and cyclists only.

On the other side lies the Voorstad St. Jacob, inhabited as early as the fourteenth century and a stopping place on the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela. On the Roerkade you board the tour boat of Rederij de Corporaal, which sails along the Roer and the Maas to the Maasplassen in about 70 minutes, the largest continuous water sports area in the Netherlands. A ticket costs € 12.50 (2026), payable in cash.

Tip from reception

Come on the first Saturday of the month, from April to October. At 12:00 the carillon figures turn above the Saturday market on the Markt, and at 13:30, 14:30 or 15:30 you can climb the cathedral tower with a guide, up to the gallery at 75 metres. No need to book.
