Around the town hall
Venlo lies on the Maas and joined the Hanseatic League in 1481. The heart of the old town is the Markt, with the town hall that Willem van Bommel from Emmerich built in Renaissance style between 1597 and 1601. Look at the two corner towers: one has a clock, the other a sundial.
From the Markt, Vleesstraat and Lomstraat lead off: the busiest shopping streets, with the well-known chains. If you prefer something more distinctive, turn into Gasthuisstraat, Jodenstraat and Klaasstraat, with fashion boutiques, specialist shops and delicatessens.
Basilica and Romerhuis
A few streets away stands St Martin’s Basilica, built in Gothic style between 1410 and 1610. In November 1944 the spire burned down; the current tower was rebuilt between 1951 and 1953 and has a carillon of 53 bells. Inside you will see fifteenth-century choir stalls and a Baroque pulpit from 1701.
On the corner of Kwartelenmarkt and Wijngaardstraat stands the Romerhuis, a late Gothic house and shop from around 1490 with a stepped gable. If you still have time, walk on to the Limburgs Museum by the Julianapark.
On the Maasboulevard
The Maasboulevard is the newest part of the town centre: opened in 2010, right on the river, with shops, café terraces and homes. You’ll find the same fashion chains here as in Vleesstraat, but with a view of the water.
The Q-Park Maasboulevard car park is right on the boulevard, so you can start or finish your walk here. That way you combine the old town and the river in a single walk.
Tip from reception
Go on a Saturday, when the weekly market is held on Nolensplein, with the car park directly underneath. Walk from the market via Lomstraat to the town hall, past the Romerhuis, and finish on a terrace on the Maasboulevard. The car parks only accept card or phone payments.
