The upside-down house
Mind Mystery on the Tienrayseweg in Horst is an indoor and outdoor experience museum: with optical illusions as the common thread, you see the world from a different perspective. Founder Jac Siebers opened it on 1 October 2018. It is not an escape room; you walk round at your own pace, for two to three hours on average.
The best-known part is the upside-down house, also called Siebrandt’s house. The furniture is nailed to the ceiling and the whole building tilts by seven degrees. Take a photo with the floor and ceiling in the frame, turn it round, and you appear to be walking across the ceiling.
Vortex, maze and Ames Room
In the Vortex you walk over a bridge that stands still, through a cylinder of stars and planets that turns around you: a test for your sense of balance. The reflection maze is a mirror maze with everyday dilemmas along the way, and in the Ames Room, based on Adelbert Ames’s 1934 design, one person looks like a giant and the other very small.
The museum has five rooms of optical art, including original works by Patrick Hughes and Hans Hamngren, 3D images you view through special glasses, and ambiguous figures. On the square you will find Plateau’s spiral, a funhouse mirror and an abyss you can use as a photo spot.

Come on a weekday outside the school holidays: it is quiet then and you get € 2 off per ticket. Book a time slot online and leave the car behind; Mind Mystery is a six-minute walk further along the same road.
